ABOUT
Hubert Kalkman
Hubert Kalkman offers an eclectic collection of Vinyl Records and Art.
Welcome to the webshop of “KALKMAN – Vinyl Records & Art”. Founded as a shop in Maastricht (NL) by Hubert Kalkman as “Vintage Deluxe” in 2014, the main business has filtered down to vinyl records and art. Over time Hubert’s passion for records and art has downscaled dealing in vintage and antique collectibles. That is why the endeavors will continue under KALKMAN Vinyl Records & Art from May 2020.
Collecting And Dealing In Art Since 2015
February 2015 marks the start of exhibiting artists and collecting/dealing in art. The idea was to exhibit 1 artist during TEFAF 2015, which has kick-started Hubert Kalkman’s desire to continue exhibiting and collecting art throughout the year. The first artist who was exhibited was the local “Pop-Art Realist” R.W. “Rudy” Beerens. While the first artist Hubert Kalkman started sourcing and collecting was British artist Hayden Kays. Since then the art collection has grown around Contemporary Pop & Street art, with occasional additions of early and mid-twentieth century modernists.
Two Year Plan To Develop Art Activities Outside Of Maastricht
At the start of 2018, the business had clearly focussed on Vinyl Records & Art, which also stimulated to see which possibilities were out there to expand the business outside of Maastricht. A two-year plan was set-up which included developing the webshop and exploring the possibility of exhibiting during an art fair. A big step was made for online presence when Hubert Kalkman was asked to become a partner on the art platform Artsy. Now a partner since November 2018, Artsy has opened up the international art market for all artists represented in the collection. Hubert’s second goal was achieved by exhibiting at his first art fair in 2019 under the trade name Kalkman Gallery, during the Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam.
From 1 Crate To 20 Crates in 3 Years
During the opening on November 1st, 2014, Hubert thought it was a good idea to play music with records. The player never left the store since, because the demand for vinyl records was overwhelming. Starting with his own collection, Hubert started buying second-hand records during his weekly visits to flea markets or antique centers. There was always a crate to dig through at these places. Within 3 years 1 crate grew to 20 crates for vinyl record collectors to flip through. With the popularity of vinyl records growing, keeping second-hand records coming in became increasingly difficult. So, from the Spring of 2018, Hubert started adding new vinyl records to the collection.
Art & Records give back
Play time!!! Art & Records give back: For a few years now Kalkman Vinyl Records & Art has been sponsoring Cunina VZW – A Belgian NGO specialized in education. It was thanks to a trip to Nepal in 2013 that an antiques business was set up. From this 1st venture the record and art dealership was born. With a strong personal connection to Nepal and the development of many friendships, during multiple trips to Kathmandu and the Solukhumbu valley, we decided to sponsor Cunina. The most recent project has been a locally manufactured playground for the kids attending their education at the Chiwong Monastery Solukhumbu. If you every have the chance, visit this beautiful area.
